Removing a follower is not the same as unfollowing
These get confused constantly, and they do opposite things.
Unfollowing means you stop seeing somebody. It changes your following list. They still follow you and still see your posts.
Removing a follower means they stop seeing you. It changes your followers list. You are unaffected in the other direction.
If somebody is bothering you, unfollowing achieves nothing — they were never in your control. Removing them is the action you want.

How to remove a follower
On X, open your followers list, find the account, use the three-dot menu on their row and choose to remove them. They are not told, and nothing appears in their notifications.
They can follow you again afterwards. Removing is not blocking — it resets the relationship rather than preventing it. For somebody persistent, blocking is the tool.
There is no bulk removal feature. X provides this one account at a time, deliberately, and no third-party tool can work around it.
When removing is the right move
Obvious spam and bot accounts that followed you, particularly if you are trying to keep your audience data meaningful.
Somebody you would rather not have reading your posts, where blocking feels heavier than the situation needs.
Accounts inflating your follower count while contributing nothing — though for that, tracking how many of your followers are dormant is usually more useful than removing them one at a time.
What to do instead at scale
Because removal is manual and one-at-a-time, it is not a housekeeping strategy. If your concern is audience quality rather than a specific person, the productive work is on the other side of the relationship.
Cleaning up who you follow is the half you control and the half that affects your ratio: auto unfollow removes non-followers and dormant accounts on a schedule.
