Following targeted accounts. A follow sends a notification, and that notification produces a profile visit — the cheapest reach available on the platform.

Direct messages. The highest-intent channel on X, and the most constrained: you can only message somebody who follows you, unless they have opened their inbox or you both hold a premium subscription.

Replies and quote posts. Genuinely effective and genuinely unautomatable — anything that mass-produces replies is spam and is treated as such.

Most people mean the first two when they say outreach, because those are the parts that can run at a consistent volume without being obnoxious.

What the platform actually allows

This is where most outreach advice goes wrong, so it is worth stating plainly: cold DMing strangers at scale is not available on X. The inbox is closed by default to accounts you do not follow.

In practice that reverses the usual order. On email you find an address and write. On X you have to earn the relationship first — they follow you, and only then does the inbox open.

That constraint is why the sequence matters more than any individual message, and why outreach on X is slower and generally higher quality than on channels where anyone can be contacted at will.

How a working sequence fits together

Find people who already follow accounts adjacent to yours, because they have demonstrated interest in the subject rather than merely matching a keyword.

Follow them at a human pace. A portion look at your profile, and a portion of those follow back. With tight targeting that second number runs between 20 and 40 per cent.

Greet the ones who follow back while they still remember doing it — the window is about a day. Two sentences, no pitch, one easy question.

Only then consider a broader message to that audience, and only when you have something worth the interruption.

Each step is unremarkable. The sequence works because it respects the order the platform imposes rather than trying to skip to the message.

How outreach differs from marketing automation

Marketing automation usually means scheduled content and drip campaigns to a list you already own. Outreach is about reaching people who are not yet on any list of yours.

The tools differ accordingly. A scheduler helps you post consistently; an outreach tool helps you reach specific people. Neither replaces the other, and confusing them is why a lot of X strategies stall — consistent posting to an audience of ninety is still an audience of ninety.
